The sheep-eating (and people-eating, dwarf-eating, etc.) ansarks described in High Iron are very similar to Andrewsarchus, an extinct predator that lived around 40 million years ago in Mongolia. Five or six feet tall . . . formidable neighbors.

      But seriously, when I start to really dive into lists and pictures of extinct mammals, it’s amazing what variety there has been. I wrote about giant armadillos before I realized such things had indeed existed. There have been huge horse-like animals with prehensile snouts. Four-tusked elephants. And that’s without even mentioning the giant birds.
